g UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

g. E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

%, . . . . . f CHAIRMAN February 28, 1986 The Honorable John D. Dingell, Chairman Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Committee on Energy and Commerce United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

This is in response to your letter of January 30, 1986 regarding placement in the Monroe County Library System (Library) of documents relating to the operation and history of the Fermi 1 nuclear power plant. You indicated that although the Commission had agreed in December 1985 to place documents relating to the Fermi i plant in the Library, they had not yet been transmitted.

The documents that are being provided relating to the Fermi i nuclear power. plant will be part of the Local Public Document Room (LPDR) collection which is maintained in the Library.

Because the Fermi 1 plant ceased operations prior to the establishment of the Commission's LPDR collections, they were never sent to the Library as were the documents relating to the Fermi 2 plant. The Fermi i collection consists of 24 shelf-feet of records and has been maintained in archival storage.

Therefore, it has been necessary to retrieve the documents from storage, reproduce them and place the records in files prior to sending them to the Library so that they will be readily accessible to members of the public in file categories similar to those for the Fermi 2 documents. This process has been in progress since we agreed to provide the documents in December 1985. The first two boxes were sent to the Library on February 5 and 15, 1986. The remainder of the records was transmitted on February 21, 1986.
