UNITED STATES 8
NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g
g WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555
~
CHAIRMAN October 1, 1985 The Honorable John D. Dingell, Chairman Committee on Energy and Commerce United States House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515
Dear Mr. Chairman:
This is in response to your letter of August 23, 1985 requesting an investigation into the premature criticality event at the Fermi 2 plant on July 2, 1985.
An NRC investigation of this event was initiated promptly after learning of it. Our investigation is expected to be completed within 60 days.
I will provide you with a report of our findings when available.
In addition, I would be pleased to arrange a briefing for you or your staff at that time if you desire.
The NRC investigation includes an inquiry into both the technical aspects of the incident and the question of timeliness on the part of the licensee in reporting the event.
In addition to the staff's investigation of licensee actions, an investigation is being conducted by our Office of Inspector and Auditor into NRC staff actions relative to the event.
Mr. Pettigrew, Chairman of the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, also wrote to the NRC concerning this event, expressing particular concern about timely reporting. We have offered to brief Mr. Pettigrew on our investigative findings and, at his request, have placed the Monroe County Office of Civil Preparedness on standard distribution for reports on Fermi 2.
Sincerely,
(* lhd bu m t,-
