Dear Mr. Denise:

Fire Protection Equipment Outage Special Report Pursuant to Section 5.9.3 (i) of the Fort Calhoun Station Technical Specifications, issued under Operating License number DPR-40, Omaha Public Power District is informing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, by means of this Special I Report, of a Fire Protectior Equipment outage lasting longer than seven days.

The electric powered fire pump, FP-1A, takes suction from circulating water cell "A". During a scheduled plant re-fueling outage, plans were made to repair one of the two travelling screens that service "A" circulating water cell, CW-2B. In order to effect repairs of screen CW-2B, it was necessary to isolate "A" cell and pump all water out of the cell, rendering fire pump FP-1A inoperable. Although plans called for the cell and fire pump to be returned to service within seven days, damage to the screen was extensive and repairs took longer than anticipated. The following is a short history of the outage:

April 9, 1984 at 0436, FP-1A removed from service.

April 16, 1984 at 2105, FP-1A returned to service. '

Therefore, Fire Pump, FP-1A, was out of service for ap-proximately seventeen and one-half hours more than the seven l day limit.

Richard P. Denise LIC-84-135 Page Two It is the policy of Omaha _Public Power District.to make every effort to ensure that all Fire Protection Equipment is avail-able for emergency use for the maximum amount of time. In this isolated instance, it was not possible to repair the screen in the allotted seven days, which extended the Fire Pump outage.

The District will continue to make every reasonable effort to ensure that the Fire Pumps are available for service.

Sincerely, l .lY W
