Docket No. 50-285 Gentlemen:  ;

4

SUBJECT:

Interim Report Pursuant to 10 CFR 21.21(a)(2) Concerning Byron Jackson Pumps I

0maha Public Power District (0 PPD) is investigating a discrepancy in the length of the impeller wear ring running fit of Byron Jackson raw water pump impellers purchased from BW/IP International, Inc., Pump Division, for use at the Fort Calhcun Station. Since the specific tolerances / dimensions were not  !

available to OPPD (e.g. proprietary information), the evaluation of this j discrepancy could not be completed within the required 60 days.

On December 10, 1993, OPPD discovered a discrepancy in three impellers purchased by OPPD to be used on a Byron Jackson type 28RXL VC two-stage pump.

The discrepancy concerns the physical dimensions of the wear ring which would not allow installation of the impellers into the pump. Since OPPD could not verify what the required dimensions should be, the three pump impellers were shipped to BW/IP for evaluation. 4 l

The results of BW/IP's investigations were received by 0 PPD on January 28, and i February 1, 1994. OPPD was informed on February 4, 1994 that the BW/IP Part 21 Evaluation Board has determined that this discrepancy is not reportable.

OPPD will complete its evaluation of this issue by March 9,1994.
