King of Prussia, PA 19406 Subj ect: Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 & 2 I.E. Bulletin No. 83-05: ASME Nuclear Code Pumps and Spare Pari.s Manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Company Pear Mr. Murley:

The subject I.E. Bulletin requests licensees, who use or plan to use Hayward Tyler Pumps and spare parts, to verify the performance of the pumps, and to furnish specific information regarding the pumps and spare parts. The following is our response to your request for additional information on this subject:

Item 1.a Review all ASME Code pumps manufactured by Hayward Tyler Pump Co. (HTPC) and provide a list of affected pumps and their service application. A list of affected pumps that was developed by review of HTPC records is given in Attachment 1.

Response: At Limerick there are two Hayward Tyler pumps on each unit.

These are the safeguard piping fill pumps (LAP 256, 1B256, 2A256, 2B256) which provide a safety-grade means of ensuring that the ECCS and RCICS pump discharge lines are kept full, to minimize the potential for water hammer in the event of failure of the primary fill source. Additionally, the pumps provide a water seal in the feedwater lines to minimize primary containment bypass leakage in the event of an accident.

F Item 1.b Provide a summary of the inservice test requirements or plans to develop inservice test requirements for each af fected pump at your facility.

Response: The safeguard piping fill pumps will be tested as part of the Limerick Pump and Valve Inservice Testing Program submitted to you by our letter to Mr. A. Schwencer dated December 28, 1982.

This program satisfies the requirements of Section XI of the ASME Code.

Item 1.c Conduct a pump performance test to assure that each pump will perform its intended safety function. As a minimum, this test should contain the criteria given in Attachment 2. In addition to the criteria presented in Attachment 2, it should be demonstrated that the pumps operated satisfactorily for a minimum duration of 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> without maintenance or repair.

Provide the results of the pump tests or, if testing has not been completed at the time of the bulletin response, provide a description of the test plan. Nuclear reactor facility licensees with pumps that are currently in service can provide the results of previous tests and/or operating experience that provide equivalent data and results in lieu of performing the above tests.

Response: The pump motor alignment check has already been performed for the Limerick Unit 1 pumps. Prior to fuel load the 48 hour5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> operational test will be performed on the Unit 1 pumps. As part of the system technical test the pump performance will be verified and a check of rotation, vibration, bearing temperature and leakage will be completed. A check of the head and motor current will be performed as part of the pre-operational test (1P-51.1). These same tests ano checks will be performed on the Unit 2 pumps at an appropriate time.

Item 1.d Provide the results of the required ASME Code system hydrostatic pressure test that was performed at your facility when the pump was tested and any corrective actions taken as a result of the test. If the system hydrostatic test has not been completed, provide the test plans.

Response: The ASME Code system hydrostatic pressure test has not yet been performed on the safeguard piping fill system. Attachment 1 is a copy of the procedure for this test. We will apprise you of any corrective actions that are required as a result of the' hydrostatic test.

2-Item 2 Those holders of operating licenses and construction permits that use or plan to use spare parts manufactured by HTPC in Code pumps'important to safety are to take the following actions:...

' Response: In accordance with your subsequent request on this subject, regarding the confidentiality of identifying spare parts supplied to our facility by Hayward Tyler, we will submit our spare parts information in a separate transmittal.

Consider this a complete response to your request.

Sincerely, f C[

PRESSURE TEST NO. /w- 43w- 7 Piping has been inspected where shown by cclor code on the attached martred up print of the latest revision of drawing /*/ - r2 available, and all drains, vents instrument connections (including the second valve on double valved connections) end the branch piping out to the indicated boundariu.

are installed. Items installed per FCR's and DCN's, and not yet shown on the drawing, have also been marked on the above print. Piping and instruu nc

-lines that will be filled 2nd/or pressurised during testing which exceed the area to be tested are shown uniquely color coded and have been walk.J down to ensure the piping is adequately supported and isolated.

Mangers and supports are installed to provide support for hydro-testing.

Spring hangers have travel stops positioned per the appropriate hanger specification. This inc'ludes hangers and supports for piping to be filled but not actually under test.

Please complete your required pre-test inspection of the piping shown on U.e attached drawing, inc.luding verifcation that all welding, post weld heat treatment and non-destructive examination is complete (except pressure '

test) including that required for all hanger, support and seismic restrais..

attachments welded to pipe and/or pressure retaining components, except that ou piping which is to be filled and/or preocurised but not documenced.

Also verify that ASSE nameplaces or stand-off attachments have been

  • inspected for injurious surface defects and, where found, repaired, non-destructively examined and accepted.

Valve packings have been installed, including those in piping to be filled which will not actually be under test.

Flushing as required prior to testing has been accomplished and piping, including that to be filled but not actually under test, meets the require.I cleanliness criteria.

Welds have not been covered with insulatica.

Where piping is embedded in structural concrete, the concrete has rauched design strength.

Wall and floor penetration seals have been welded to pipe where. required.

We required coepletion date for the test is 4 /P - /v'3 .
