At Tr. 22401 Robert Wheeler offered to provide information concerning certain work which was performed in connection with an underground fireline at the Midland site. Mr. Wheeler has been able to determine that af ter NRC Staf f approval was obtained, physical connections were made to the fireline in question on or about October 16, 1982 to restore fire service to portions of the jobsite. The physical connections vers a mechanical operation not involving excavations or backfilling. The entire fireline excavation was backfilled at a later date, pursuant to NRC authorization under the Region III

, work authorization procedure.
