84-01, concerning ; inspection- for cracks in the Mark I containment torus vent

~ header: . ,

a The reference Bulletin was issued as -a1. result of the discovery of cracking:in the containment vent header. at Hatch Unit 2. At the time of discovery, the unit was in a cold shutdown condition for refueling and modifications. On February 3,1984, GPC decided to . shut down Hatch Unit 1 for inspection of the. vent header. Therefore, the provisions of the

. Bulletin, ~which . applied to funits already in cold shutdown, were addressed

for both Hatch units; The Bulletin required inspection of - the entire vent header and the main

~ ivents'in the region near the ' intersection with the vent header. On Unit 1, -

three visual inspections of these areas were performed. The first

' inspection was conducted from a < catwalk covering a- line of view of 170

. degrees from top center and down on the outboard side of the vent header.

The second -inspection was conducted from an inflatable ~ raft providing a line of view coverf ng the. remaining 190 degrees from top center and down on the

-inboard side. Thus the entire circumference of the vent header was

. -inspected. The third inspection was conducted in the interior of the vent

-header. No apparent cracking or' relevant indications were found.

On Unit 2, the torus had been drained for painting during the outage. A jcomplete: walkdown . inspection was performed of the areas required by the

Bulletin.- No additional' . cracking or- relevant indications were found beyond the origina1 cracking which prompted issuance of the Bulletin.
