Gentlenen:
As part of the evaluation of the vent header cracking incident at Plant Hatch Unit 2, a thermal stress analysis was performed by General Electric Cmpany. 'Ihe results of that analysis are doctmented in the attached report.
The analysis shows that:
(1) the observed cracking can be explained by the injection of cold nitrogen into the contaiment, (2) any cracking is expected to be through-wall, making it detectable by visual inspection or leak testing, and (3) the critical crack length for a IOCA (the smallest through-wall crack which would propagate under IOCA conditions) is largo enough that it would be detected by routine visual inspection.
Please contact this office if there are any questions.
