  • NRC I.E. Inspection Report Nos.

50-373/82-54 and 50-374/82-22 NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374 References (a): R. L. Spessard letter to Cordell Reed dated April 28, 1983. ,

(b): D. L. Farrar letter to J. G. Keppler dated May 27, 1983.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

. Reference (a) transmitted Inspection Report Nos. 50-373/82-54 and 50-374/82-22. The Commonwealth Edison Company response to the Notice  ;

of Violation was submitted by Reference (b).

Reference (a) also stated:

"During the inspection, questions were raised regarding the fire endurance capability of firestops which: '

1. exhibit cracks and/or separations.
2. contain breakthroughs for tne routing of new cables.
3. may exceed the cable density used in the tests performed to

. qualify the assemblies as 3-hour fire barriers, 4.- deviate from the configurations qualified by tests.

These issues are addressed in the report. Please submit within 60 days of the date of this letter the necessary documentation, backed by appropriate testing to ASTM E-119, to justify the position.taken by your representatives during or subsequent to the inspection."

2- June 10, 1983 We will not be able to submit a complete response within 60 days of Reference (a). Our response will cover every item regarding the fire endurance capability of the Firecode CT Gypsum cement firestops except the cable densities in the Unit 1 penetrations. We will submit our response on this item by August 5, 1983.

1 This delay is caused by the large amount of labor required to determine the cable density in each penetration. This work requires about 750 man-hours of labor per unit. This delay was discussed and approved by Mr. F. Maura in a telecon with C. W. Schroeder on June 10, 1983.

If there are any further questions regarding this matter, please contact this office.

Very truly yours, C c ps/ B 3 d s- D. L. Farrar Director of Nuclear Licensing jj CWS/Im cc: Region III Inspector - LSCS i
