D.C. 20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Unit 1 Progress Update

Dear Mr. Youngblood:

This letter is provided as an update of our progress on Unit 1 of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant for the month of July, 1985. Aa you are aware, our projected fuel load date is September 27, 1985. A number of intensive efforts have been focused on the bulk progress and key critical path activities remaining to be completed. At this time we are presently tnree weeks negative on hard critical path activities. A summary of those activities which have occurred since our last update (July 11, 1935) follows:

Construction Construction is essentially complete (See Attachment 1). We still do not expect any construction related items to impact our fuel load schedule.

Preoperational Testing 74 of 106 preoperational tests have now been completed in the field and results are undergoing review and approval. Containment SIT /CILRT have been completed in the field and the Loss of Of fsite Power Test is in progress. Although testing progress in July was less than expected, considerable recovery efforts are underway and we expect to be close to schedule by the end of August.

Preoperational testing progress is shown on Attachment 2.

Licensing Good progream continues to be made in responding to open SER issues and NRR requests for additional information. Two SER Outstanding Issues (Number's 4 )

and 21), five SER Confirmatory Issues (Number's 1, 22, 41, 42, and $4), and four requests f or additional information require further response f rom CEI due to staff review of previous submittels and additional information offered by CEI. There are four additional items for which CEI is providing clarifications requiring staff review. These items are being submitted this month and are expected to be resolved prior to issuance of the next SER.

Mro B. J. Youngblood August 15, 1985 PY-CEI/NRR-0315 L We will continue to update you on a monthly basis until licensing. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to contact me.

Very truly yours, O

Murray R. Edelman Vice President Nuclear Group MREinje Attachment cc Jay Silberg, Esq.
