The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by Region V staff on this date.

FACILITY: Southern California Edison Inc. Emergency Classification San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station XX Notification of Unusual Event Unit 2 Alert DN 50-361 Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN FORTY-EIGHT HOURS DUE TO A FIRE IN THE TURBINE CENERATOR ENCLOSURE The licensee declared an unusual event at 10:30 am (PDT) due to a turbine trip / reactor. trip caused by a fire in the main turbine exciter enclosure in Unit 2. The Headquarters duty officer was notified at 10:58 am (PDT).

The event was terminated at 10:55 am (PDT) after the fire was extinguished. All reactor-shutdown systems operated. satisfactorily. The resident inspector staff is following up the

-evsnt and have noted the enclosure is slightly deformed, most probably due to an explosion in the enclosure. The exact cause of the fire and extent of damage are still being dstermined.
