Subject:

BOMB THREAT At about 6:30 p.m., October 26, 1987, a fireman at the Vineland, New Jersey Fire Company, about 25 miles from the Salem plants, received a telephone call from a male who stated "There is a bomb on the Salem Plant." The fireman notified Police Department personnel in Vineland, who, after an unsuccessful attempt to contact the.

licensee, notified the NRC Operations Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The Headquarter's Operations Officer (H00) promptly notified the licensee's Senior Shift Supervisor (SSS) of the threat at 7:19 p.m. The SSS declared an unusual event, in accordance with emergency plan procedures, and the senior security supervisor directed a search of the vital areas of each plant, even though the threat was assessed to have a low credibility. The search proved negative and that information was provided to the H00 at 9:48 p.m. Local law enforcement agencies, the FBI, as well as licensee emergency preparedness personnel, were notified by the licensee.
