In keeping with its statutory responsibility to regulate nuclear activities in order to protect the public health and safety and to preserve environmental quality, the NRC must be prepared to respond quickly to any incident involving NRC licensed activities that pose a potential threat to the public and the U environment. The Region ! Incident Response Supplement to NUREG-0845 dated

, April 1983, sets forth the regional activities which will be undertaken to ensure that NRC statutory responsibilities are fulfilled.

The Sopplement describes NRC Region I response to incidents involving licensed power plants, materials facilities and transportation accide'nts and assigns

. responsibilities for emergency planning and response. The Supplement also

discusses the degree of cooperation and interaction with local, state, and 4 other federal organizations needed to help in meeting NRC statutory respon-i sibilities. The Supplement contains separate implementing procedures which delineate the manner in which each function is to be performed, the criteria to be used in decision making, and how the responsibilities assigned a;e to be eserci sed. ,
