SUBJECT:

UNIT SHUT DOWN TO REPAIR REACTOR COOLANT. SYSTEM LEAK The licensee manually shut down ' Unit 1 on June 23 at 3:32 p.m. (EDT) after experiencing an unidentified leak of an estimated 40 gallons per minute in the Reactor Coolant System' (RCS).

The . location of the leak was subsequently identified as packing on a reactor coolant loop stop valve.

The licensee ' manually backseated all loop stop valves and performed a leak test which determined that the unidentified leak rate had been reduced from 40 gallons per minute to less than a gallon per minute (.88 gpm).

l The unit is currently in Mode 4 and is preparing to go to Mode 5 in order to effect i repairs.

The NRC resident inspector will perform a routine followup.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed. -

Both the licensee and the NRC are prepared to respond to media inquiries should they occur.

l The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee to the I headquarters Incident Response Center at 3:54 p.m. (EDT) on June 23. l This information is current as of-11:00 a.m. (EDT) on June 24.
