Follow-up Release Notification File CN-707.26 Pursuant to Oubchapter J of 40 CFR, Part 355 (Emergency Planning and Notification), Duke Powsr Company hereby provides written follow-up emargency notice of a reportable hazardous substance release as defined by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liabili:y Act of 19PO (CERCLA). As your offices were verbally notified on July 6, 1991, approximately 100 gallons (130 pounds) of sodium hypochlorite was released to the ground at the Catawba Nuclear Station on the afternoon of July 6, 1591. Notification of this release was also made to the National Response Center, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as required Dy 10 CFR Peru 50.72 gb)(2)(vi), and by the Environmental Protection Plan as contained in the Technical Specification of the Operating License.

The duration of the release was approximately 10 minutes. The reportable quantity for sodium hypochlorite, as assigned by Tcble 302.4, 40 CFR Part 302, is 100 pounds. Sodium hypochlorite is not considered to be an Extremely Hazardous Substance under SARA.

The release occurred rhen a pa cable tank containing a 13% sodium hypochlorite solution overturned while being moved onsite. The spill entered a yard drain after travelling acroce the ground and collected into a yard drain secondary containment sump system. From there it was pumped into the station's Conventional Wastewater Treatment System (WC) .

The spill area was flushed with water, routed to WC, and the sodium hypochlorite neutralized within WC prior to discharge into Lake Wylie.

There are no anticipated acute or chronic health risks associated with this release. The Catawba Nuclear Station employees that responded to the spill were dressed out in appropriate protective equipment and no one was injured as a result of the spill or its cleanup.
