Subject:
Reportable 10 CFR 50.55 (c) Item - Westinghouse 3 Inch Motor Operated Valves
Dear Sir:
C Reference 2, an interim report, identified that a testing program was in progress to idcntify the cause and corrective action to be taken for the reportable problem with Westinghouse 3 inch motor operated valves.
The engineering valve test program was comprised of a series of flow tests performed in a hydraulic test laLoratory using a centrifugal charging pump to provide flow and pressure. These te,sts consisted of 75 to 100 closing and opening cycles against flows and pressures as high as 600 gpm and 2600 psid, respectively. These cycles provided the expected valve seat to disk wear which resulted in stabilized valve closing loads. Once the stabilized level was reached, closing tests were run at lower flows and differential pressures to determine the extent of the closure problem.
Modifications for the three inch valves have been qualified by testing. These modifications are as follows:

O e e
te ,
UfS. Nuclear Regulatory Conmission Page 2.
SBN-159 3GM88 - 1. Change the operator gear ratio to insure 80%
voltage closing capability.
- 2. Implement limit closing control utilizing the capabilities of the spring campensators on the limitorque SB-00 operators.
3GM99 - 1. Change the operator from limitorque SMB-000 to SB-00.
- 2. Implement limit closing control.
These modifications will be made at Seabrook Station prior to Fuel load.-
Very truly yours, tk ,,
