Dear Sir:

In Reference (c), New Hampshire Yankee reported a 10CFR50.55(e) deficiency concerning ambient temperature compensation calibration shif ts in Veritrak Group A transmitters. These temperature compensa-tion shifts could create a condition where the allowable value limit of the Seabrook Station " Final Draft" Technical Specification could be exceeded. The following is the corrective action being implemented to to resolve this item.

Corrective Action As discussed with the Resident NRC Inspector, the corrective action is proceeding in two phases, initial and final, each of which is described below.

United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission SBN-Attention:- - Mr. William F. Kane Page 2 The initial action taken was to establish administrative con-trols (discussed in detail in Reference (d)] on the transmitter setpoint. Westinghouse, as a result of initial testing efforts (discussed in References (c) and (d)], developed a new bounding error limit for ambient temperature compensation. This error limit value has been incorporated into the applicable.Seabrook Station calibration and testing procedures. As such the initial corrective action phase has been completed.

The final action to be taken is replacement of the existing transmitters with transmitters manufactured by Rosemount. These transmitters are expected to be installed during February,1987.

Since the actual installation date is dependent upon transmitter availability aad plant conditions, the Resident NRC Inspector will be kept appraised of NHY's installation schedule. It should be noted that, contrary to Reference (c), NHY will not inform Region I when Westinghouse has completed testing activities. Since NHY has decided to install Rosemount transmitters, there is no further need to monitor Westinghouse's testing program and its results.

Since the Resident NRC Inspector will be appraised of the corrective action status, no further formal communication is anticipated. As such this letter is being filed as the final 10CFR50.55(e) report.

Very truly yours,

/cyr $
