March 17, 1980 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Mr. Darrell Eisenhut, Acting Director Division of Operating Reactors Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, DC 20555 Subj ect: LWR Primary Coolant System Pressure Isolation Valves Cooper Nuclear Station NRC Docket No. 50-298, DPR-46

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

This letter is written in response to your February 23, 1980 letter to all LWR Licensees concerning the subject it.olation valves.

Item 1 Describe the valve configuracion at your plant and indicate if an Event V isolation valve configuration exists within the Class I boundary of the h1gh pressure piping connecting PCS piping to low pressure system piping; e.g., (1) two check valves in series, or (2) two check valves in series with a MOV.

Response

A review of all high pressure piping penetrating the drywell and connecting to the Primary Coolant System (PCS) has been conducted.

Attached are simplified drawings of the systems identified which connect PCS piping to low pressure piping. These drawings were also submitted November 16, 1979 in response to the NRC Bulletins and Orders Task Force review of containment isolation provisions at CNS. Drawings are provided for Core Spray and Low Pressure Safety Injection as identified in the NRC request, as well as High Pressure Coolant Injection, Reactor Core Isolation Cooling, and the Sampling system. No Event V arrangements have been identified. As discussed with the staff, the Feedwater System was not considered for purposes of this review.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact me.

Very truly yours, (

g 4%. \/
