Extension to Deadline for Response to Generic Letter 89 19 Cooper Nuclear Station Docket 50 298 DPR 46

^

Reference:

Generic Letter 89 19 dated September 20, 1989, " Request for Action Related to Resolution of Unresolved Safety Issue A 47, ' Safety Implications of Control Systems in LWR Nuclear Power Plants' Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.54(f)"

On March 6, 1990, the Boiling Water Reactor Owners' Croup (BWROG) received NRC approval of its request to extend the response deadline specified in Generic Letter 89 19. Pursuant to the NRC approval of this request, the Nebraska Public Power District (District) herewith notifies the NRC of its intent to

-defer its response to the generic letter in accordance with the approved scheduler extension.

On March 20, 1989, the NRC issued Generic Letter 89 19 (Reference) which requested licenses to review the design of their feedwater control system to ensure adequate protection existed to prevent overfilling the reactor vessel (in the case of BWRs). The District is participating in the BWROC's efforts to address this issue. Accordingly, the District's response to the generic letter will rely, in part, on the results of that effort.

Because the BWROG's work could not be completed by the original March 20, 1990 deadline, the NRC was requested to extend the generic letter response deadline to facilitate completion of this effort. On March 6, 1990, the NRC staff approved the BWROG's request, and granted a 45 day extension to May 4, 1990, i Therefore, the District will submit its response to Generic Letter 89 19 on or

( before May 4, 1990.
