" Follow up Response to Generic Letter 88 14" On August. 8, 1988, the NRC issued Generic Letter 8814 (Reference 1). This letter requested licensees and construction permit holders to perform a design and operations verification of ' the instrument air system, Briefly, this effort consisted of:

o Verification that instrument air quality is consistent with the manufacturers' air quality requirements for individual components served o Verification that maintenance practices, emergw,cf procedures, and training adequately ensures that essential equipment will function correctly upon loss of instrument air i

o Verification that the instrument air system design, including essential components served, function as intended upon loss of instrument air o Discussion of the District's program for maintaining proper instrument air quality By letter dated February 20, 1989 (Reference 2), the District provided its initial response to Generic Letter 8814. This letter addressed each of the above areas, described ongoing efforts in response to t.he generic letter, described other ongoing efforts related to, but not required in response to the gencric letter, and committed to notify the NRC upon completion of these efforts.

Docuncnt C:ntrol D>ak March 15,1990 Page 2 By letter dated February 7, 1990, (Reference 3) the District provided a follow up response to Generic Letter 88 14. This response indicated the District had completed its efforts initiated in response to the generic letter with one exception, provided an update of the status of two related ongoing efforts, and committed to notify the NRC upon completion of the one item remaining to be completed in response to the generic letter.

The District has now completed its response to Generic Letter 88 14 The final item, verification that manufacturers' air quality requirements for essential components served by the CNS Instrument Air System (IAS) are consistent with the air quality produced by the 1AS, has been completed.

Therefore, the District has fulfilled its commitments with respect to Generic Letter 88 14 The two other related efforts described in references 2 and 3 were not Generic Letter 8814 recommendacions. These efforts were undertaken as part of the District's configuration management program. These efforts are continuing and include the generation of a Design Criteria Document for the IAS, and the as built review of the IAS.

As the District has completed it response to Generic Letter 8814, no further communication on this subject is presently planned.
