8r."HaroldR.Denton-2-AEP:NRC:0775AKThesetwovalvesarelocatedoutsidecontainmentinthedieselgeneratorpipetunnel.Thistunnelcontainsafour-inchsteamlinethatsuppliestheturbine-drivenauxiliaryfeedwaterpump.Shouldacriticalsizecrackdevelopinthispipingsection,itcouldgoundetectedforaslongaseighthoursbecausetheareaispatrolledonlyoncepershift.Duringthistime,thetemperaturewouldincrease,anditisjudgedthattheresultingconditionswouldmeetthe10CFR50.49definitionofaharshenvironment.Forthisreason,thesetwovalveswillnotberemovedfromtheenvironmentallyqualifiedequipmentlist.SincethereplacementoftheundocumentedwiresduringMarch1986,thesevalveshavemetthecriteriaforenvironmentallyqualifiedequipment,andtheirqualificationwillbemaintainedfollowingexistingprocedures.ThismatterwasdiscussedwithbothyourstaffandtheNRCRegionIIIstaff.Duringthecourseofthediscussion,westatedthatwebelievedthatthejumperwireswerenotunqualified,butonlylackedqualificationdocumentation.Tosubstantiatethisbeliefweintendtosubjecttheundocumentedjumpercablestotheappropriatetesting.Thetestprogramiscurrentlyunderdevelopment.WeanticipatethatourplansandschedulesforsuchtestingwillbecompletebyFebruary28,1987.ThisdocumenthasbeenpreparedfollowingCorporateprocedureswhichincorporateareasonablesetofcontrolstoinsureitsaccuracyandcompletenesspriortosignaturebytheundersigned.VerytrulyyoursP.Aexich)QVicePresidentcc:JohnE.DolanW.G.Smith,Jr.-BridgmanR.C.CallenG.BruchmannG.CharnoffNRCResidentInspector-BridgmanJ.G.Keppler-RegionIII
