Dear Sirs:

The purpose of this letter is twofold. First, we are transmitting a supplemental environmental test program for a safety injection pump motor.

Second, we wish to inform you of the status of the environmental qualification testing program for Limitorque valve internal wiring.

Safety In ection Pum Motor

- To fulfill the commitment that we made in Licensee Event Report No.

86-031-00, we are transmitting as Attachment 1 to this letter the supplemental environmental qualification test program for the Unit 2 safety injection pump motor. A copy of Licensee Event Report No. 86-031-00 is included as Attachment 2. The purpose of this testing is to verify that the repair work performed by the noncertified motor repair shop did not have an adverse impact on the original environmental qualification of the safety injection pump motor.

This test program will consist of two tasks. Task 1 will consist of an evaluation performed to predict the effect that radiation will have on the original stator winding insulation material when coated with two insulating varnishes used by the noncertified motor repair shop. Task 2 will consist of the irradiation and electrical testing of a sample motor stator winding. The sample will be coated with the insulating varnishes used by the noncertified shop.

Battelle Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio will perform both tasks.

Task 1 is tentatively scheduled to start in March 1987. Task 2, which is dependent upon our receipt of an appropriate test sample from Westinghouse Electric Corporation, will begin as soon as the sample becomes available.

As of this date, we have not been able to obtain a firm schedule from Westinghouse for delivery of the sample. Once started, Task 1 will take approximately three months for completion and our internal review. The testing program involved in Task 2 will take approximately four months from

,jl AEP:NRC:0775AL commencement of testing to completion of internal review. Upon completion of Tasks 1 and 2, we will notify the NRC of the results. If the irradiation testing of the sample should fail to produce conclusive, positive results, the entire motor will be tested.

Limitor ue Valve Internal Wirin In our letter AEP:NRC:0775AK, dated January 21, 1987 (Attachment 3 to this letter), we stated that we would conduct environmental qualification testing of the internal wiring of Limitorque valves 2-WMO-724 and 2-WMO-726. The Farwell & Hendricks Test Facility in Milford, Ohio will do this testing, which is expected to start before the end of March 1987.

Upon completion of this program, we will notify the NRC of the results.

This document has been prepared following Corporate procedures which incorporate a reasonable set of controls to insure its accuracy and completeness prior to signature by the undersigned.
