SUBJECT:

SAFETY EVALUATION ADDRESSING THERMO-LAG RELATED AMPACITY DERATING ISSUES FOR DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT NO. 1 (TAC NO. M82809)

Dear Mr. Wood:

By letter dated November 5, 1996, you submitted your response to the NRC request for additional information dated October 9, 1996, related to ampacity derating issues due to application of Thermo-Lag fire barrier material at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. Your response was supplemented by an evaluation dated September 10, 1997.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has completed its review of your submittal. The results of the review are documented in the enclosed safety evaluation.

On the basis of its review, the staff has concluded that the ampacity derating analysis results are acceptable and there are no significant safety hazards associated with the application of ampacity derating methodology at Davis-Besse. You should retain all documentation related to the resolution of the ampacity issue for future NRC audits or inspections.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me.

Sincerely, Original signed by: [
