SUBJECT:
EARTHQUAKE 15 MILES SOUTHWEST OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA At 1:13 and 1:44 AM, PDT, an earthquake and aftershock of 5.1 and 4.2 magnitudes, respectively, occurred approximately 15 miles, southwest of San Jose, California. The
-earthquake'was at a depth of 15 kilometers. The General Electric, NTR reactor and the
' Aerotest, TRIGA reactors-are located approximately 37 and 47 miles from the epicenter, l respectively. Both reactors were shut down at the time. The earthquake was felt at' I the GE Vallecitos facility. . An immediate tour at GE disclosed no damage. The NTR
, reactor at GE has no seismic instrumentation. The seismic instrumentation at Aerotest l was not actuated. Licensee representatives at both facilities reported no evidence of damage, and no releases of radioactive material.
The University of California, Berkeley, TRIGA reactor, 56 miles from the epicenter, has
, been defueled and the fuel shipped offsite.
The earthquake and aftershock were widely felt in the San Francisco Bay area. There

was considerable media attention directed at the earthquake, however none of this i attention was associated with reactor facilities in the area.
