GENERIC LETTER 88-14, " INSTRUMENT AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM PROBLEMS AFFECTING SAFETY RELATED EQUIPMENT" (TAC NO. M 71720)

RE: SHOREHAM NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 1 Your letter of February 21, 1989, provided LILCO's response to the subject generic letter. In this response LILCO committed to:

Complete its investigation of variances found from design condition and to take appropriate measures to correct those parameters found beyond specification limits.

To evaluate several plant hardware modifications, to ensure that the Shoreham plant does not experience instrument air problems.

To make changes in both the Shoreham's operating procedures and emergency operating procedures to assist operators in identifying and verifying the design responses of selected air operated components.

To change the frequency of preventative maintenance surveillance of the air dryers from 24 to 12 months; and To enhance the training programs for licensed operation, non-licensed operators and I & C technicians to address instrument air system concern.

8 The staff has completed its review of your submittal and finds that LILCO is taking correct and positive measures towards ensuring that the Shoreham facility does not experience instrument air system problems.
