Docket No. 50-322 Mr. Leslie Hill, Resident Manager Long Island Power Authority Shoreham Nuclear Power Station P. O. Box 628 North Country Road Wading River, New York 11792

Dear Mr. Hill:

SUBJECT:

APPROVAL OF DECOMMISSIONING PLAN CHANGE The NRC staff has reviewed LIPA's letter LSNRC-2019 dated December 30, 1992, requesting approval for a change to the Shoreham Decommissioning Plan in accordance with Condition 4 for the Shoreham Decommissioning Order. To support dismantlement, LIPA is requesting approval to use a temporary filtration and demineralizer system to perform the non-safety related function of maintaining the water chemistry in the spent fuel pool. The temporary system is described in the attachment to LSNRC-2019.

The NRC staff has completed its review of the proposed changes in LSNRC-2019, and is approving the use of the temporary filtration and demineralizer system to perform the non-safety related function of maintaining the water chemistry in the srmt fuel pool. The staff based its approval of the temporary system on the f sing: 1) the rate of decay heat generation is negligible because of the It surn-up of the Shoreham irradiated fuel (less than two effective full power days), and the cooling function of the spent fuel pool cleanup system is unnecessary; 2) the temporary system's specifications compared favorably with the specifications of the existing system; and 3) this change meets the water chemistry requirements of Technical Specifications 3/4.5.5.

Should you have any additional questions, you may call me at (301) 504-3438.
