Gentlemen:

Subject: Inspection Report No. 50-322/85-38

A routine radiological safety inspection was conducted by Mr. R. Nimitz of

this office on October 21 - 25, 1985 of your Shoreham Nuclear Power Station.

The findings of this inspection were discussed with Mr. Steiger at the con-

clusion of the inspection.

The inspection covered: previous findings; start-up survey program; preopera-

tional and start-up testing of the off gas system; high radiation area controls;

and radiological controls during source changeout.

No violations were observed and no response to this letter is required. The

actions taken to close out the findings of the special Post Accident Sampling

Inspection were commendable. Our review of your high radiation area controls

program indicates additional attention to this area is required. These concerns

have been' discussed and acknowledged by your staff, and corrective actions are .

being implemented.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosure

will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
