Second Interim 10CFR50.55(e) Report; Cracked and Broken Puffer Piston Rods in Brown Boveri Type 5HK Breakers

Dear Sir:

In Reference (c), we filed an Interim 10CFR50.55(e) Report regarding cracked and broken puffer piston rods in Brown Boveri Type 5HK breakers. We stated that all the 5HK 350 breakers at Seabrook Unit 1 will be inspected for cracked or broken puffer piston rods, and the results of the inspection would determine if further action is required.

The inspection has been completed, and it has revealed a number of puffer piston rods with hairline cracks of varying degrees. Based on these results, it has been decided to replace all the defective rods. The replacement rods are the type recommended by the manufacturer, Brown Boveri Electric.

For conservatism, the plan at present is to replace not only the affected rods but all rods on Unit 1 5HK breakers, even if they do not show defects at the present time.
