OF PUBLIC MEETINGS RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THESHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. MD3611)The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted environmental scopingmeetings related to the review of the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1, license renewal application submitted by Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L), now doing business as Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc. Two public meetings were conducted on April 18, 2007, at New Horizons Fellowship, 820 E. Williams Street, Apex, North Carolina. Approximately 180 people attended the meetings. The attendees included representatives of the NRC staff, members of the public, local citizen organizations, representatives from CP&L, news media, and local government officials. Public comments and questions addressed a wide range of issues including license renewal process, safety and emergency preparedness, spent fuel storage and disposal, effects of radiation on human health, and alternatives to license renewal.A combined listing of participants for both public meetings is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting handouts provided during the public meeting open house.

Please note that if you wish to provide formal comments regarding the scope of the environmental review for Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1, they must be presented at either session of today's transcribed public meetings or provided in writing or electronically by May 19, 2007.
