InourJune15,1984lettertoyouwerequestedtechnicalexemptionfortwoareasof10CFR50AppendixR.Theseareasinclude(1)ventilationductpenetrationsnotsuppliedwithfiredampers,and(2)seismicgapsbetweenthecontainmentandauxiliarybuildings.AttachedisSupplement2totheMaroh3,1983,Reportentitled"SafeShutdownCapabilityAssessmentandProposedModifications"fortheD.C.CookNuclearPlant.Thissupplement,preparedbyourConsultantEngineeringPlanningandManagement,Inc.(EPM),isadetailedengineeringevaluationwhichprovidesjustificationforthetechnicalexemptionsrequestedinourJune15,1984letter.Thefollowingsummarizesthefindingsoftheattachedevaluation.VENTILATIONDUCTS:Theevaluationconcludesthat;,becauseofalowcombustibleloadingoflessthan15minutesinallapplicablefireareas/zones,thelocationofsafeshutdowncomponents/circuitsandthedetectionandsuppressionsystemsavailableinthesubjectfirearea/zones,adequateprotectionfromductrelatedfiredamageisprovidedandsafeshutdowncapabilityisensured.Asdiscussedwithyourstaff,theevaluationincludesfiveadditionalventilationductpenetrationswithoutfiredampers,thatalsorequiretechnicalexemptions.TheseductpenetrationslistedbelowwerenotidentifiedintheJune15,1984letter.No.ofSizeof28"x34"22"x34"44"x24"650~50633'uxiliaryBldgAuxiliaryBldgAuxiliaryBldg8408i703228408i3PDRADOCK0500031'5IFPDR
