This letter refers to the routine resident ~ safety inspection conducted by

-Mr. P. W. Eselgmth on March 1 - March 31,1985, at the Shoreham Nuclear

Power'$tation. Wading River, New York. The inspection consisted of

observations of activities, interviews with personnel and document reviews.

The results of the inspection are described in the NRC Region I Inspection

Report enclosed with this letter and were discussed with members of your ,

staff at the conclusion of the inspection.  :

the enclosed inspection report also reviews your response to the recent

violation pertaining to the lack of prompt approved corrective actions for

ide'ntified deficiencies. This review points out that the planned corrective

-action steps for this violation incorporates follow-up program weaknesses -

that may have contributed to the original noncogliance. Your program for

' correcting deficiencies should be oriented towards avoiding a protracted

process of deficiency resolution. This area of MRC concern will be the

subject of future NRC inspections.

This inspection report closes three inspection items and one bulletin and

'

opens two new items. No violations of NRC requirements were'found, and you

need not reply to this letter.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosures

will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
