Dear Mr. Morris:

This is in reply to the notification you made to Mr. Daniel James of my staff on April 6, 1992, regarding *an anonymous complaint of storage time of mixed wastes (radioactive hazardous waste) in excess of 90 days at the Surry Power Station. In response to your call, we have verified the amounts and nature of waste materials stored at the station. No mixed wastes are stored at Surry Power station.

As of April 7, 1992, there are a number of drums of non-hazardous radioactively contaminated wastes stored, in compliance with Nuclear

  • Regulatory Commission requirements, at the Surry Power station's radioactive waste storage areas. However, none contain mixed waste; the contents of the drums consist of either bitumen or oil. These waste materials are accumulated until sufficient quantities are available for cost efficient, and proper, treatment.

Apparently, the complainant has mistakenly believed these drums to contain regulated hazardous/mixed wastes.

On March 31: 1992, 94 drums of non-hazardous non-radioactive waste materials were shipped to Pinewood, South Carolina. These materials were resin and charcoal filter media, and bitumen. This may also have been misinterpreted as a hazardous/mixed waste shipment.

Surry Power station may accumulate non-radioactive, non-hazardous wastes for offsite treatment and disposal as allowed by federal regulations. As of April 7, there were 5 drums of hazardous waste in the designated storage *area. None exceeded the allowable accumulation time. As stated above, no mixed wastes are present.

our records indicate that these materials have been managed .in accordance with the applicable regulations.
