The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN DUE TO INCREASED REACTOR COOLANT PUMP VIBRATION The licensee has shut down Unit 3 and will begin a scheduled refueling outage six weeks early because of excessive vibrations in reactor coolant pump 382. The unit has been operating at 72 percent power since October 30, 1986, when reactor coolant pump 3B1 was removed from service for the same reason.

During the outage, reactor coolant pumps 381, 3B2 and 3Al will be disassembled and modified. Reactor coolant pump 3A2 was modified during the last outage.

This PN is being issued for information purposes only.

The NRC (Region II) received initial notification of this event by telephone from the resident inspector at 10:00 a.m. on December 18.
