Facility: Oconee Nuclear Station Duke Power Company Subject-UNPLANNED RELEASE OF RADI0 ACTIVITY IN LIQUID EFFLUENTS On May 12, 1977, Oconee Station personnel informed Region II that an unplanned release of rc2ioactivity in liquid occurred on May 11, 1977.
According to Oconee personnel, above-nermal levels of radioactivity were i
released from a turbine building sump, to the Kaowee River via a yard drainage system. Oconee personnel stated that no technical specifi-catiou release limits were exceeded.
,l l The cause of the abnormal levels of radioactivity are not known at this time. Ocoree personnel are currently investigating to determine the j
cause of the incident. Oconee perJonnel indicate that monitoring of the i
Turbine Building Sump and Yard Drainage System is continuing.
i' Duke has made a press release concerning the incident. A copy of this release is attached. State of South Carolina radiological protection officials and Clemson University officials have been notified according to Oconee personnel.
Region II inspectors will be on site May 13 to followup on this incident.
