PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-78-140 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

SUBJECT:

WORKER HOSPITALIZED FOR HEAT EXHAUSTION ,

1 A worker at Oconee Nuclear Station passed out from heat exhaustion on August 3 after exiting the Unit 1 containment. Due to contamination l levels in the work area, the individual was wearing a double set of protective coveralls.

The outer set of coveralls was removed and the worker was taken to Oconee Memorial Hospital in Seneca, South Carolina by ambulance. He was treated, released, and returned to work later the

, same day. No injury due to radiation or radi'oactive contamination im l occurred. Precautionary contamination surveys of the ambulance and hospital verified no contamination was spread. The State of South

, Carolina has been notified. l There has been local media interest. Neither NRC nor Duke Power Company plan to issue news releases. The licensee and Region II are responding to local media e quiries.

This PN is issued for information only and no further action by IE is anticipated.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by' tele-phone from IE inspectors at the Oconee Station on August 3. This information is current as of 2:00 p.a. on August 4.
