Oconee Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-269, 270, and 287 Seneca, South Carolina

SUBJECT:

HIGH FILM BADGE EXPOSURES OF VENDOR EMPLOYEES Film badge dosimeters provided and used by five contract workers from Todd Shipyards, Galveston, Texas at the Oconee Nuclear Station indicated high exposures (high energy gamma radiation) ranging from 1.3 Rems to 55 Rems. Dual dosimetry provided by Oconee indicated a maximum indivi-dual exposure to 2.7 rems. Extra Todd film badges which are not issued

, to the workers, but remained in the workers' motel rooms, indicated exposures from 15 Rems to 100 Rems.

Region II communications with Oconee, Todd Shipyards, and Landauer (the film badge vendor) personnel indicated the high exposures probably occurred from August 8 to August 19. Preliminary evaluations indicate IsW " that the high exposures did not occur at the Oconee site nor in transit.

The State of South Carolina (an agreement state) had previously been informed of this event and investigated the possibility of exposure at the motel where the contract workers resided. Facts obtained during this investigation and related efforts by Region II indicate that the high film badge exposure did not occur at the motel.

... Region IV (Dallas) inspectors are accompanying a representative of the State of Texas today to review the matter at Todd Shipyards in Galve.ston, Texas. _ ..

Media' interest is expected but has not occurred at this time. Region II does not alan to issue a news release. The NRC Office of State Programs is being (ept informed.
