. _ - . .. UNPLANNED AREA RELEASE OF RADIOACTIVE LIQUID TO AN UNRESTRICTED On January 17, 1977, during steam generator repair activities, about r-8,000 gallons of secondary system water was inadvertently released j to turbine building sumps. The secondary system water was contami- '

nated due to a steam generator tube leak that occurred on January 15, 1977. The water was automatically pumped from the sumps to plant set-tling basins whi'ch overflowed to the Keowee River. During periods be- ,

i tween January 17 and January 20, the concentration of iodine-131 in j

the river at the basin outfall exceeded the technical specification limits. About three curies of iodine-131 were released as of January 28, g=

1977.

Water samples taken following the release indicated that radioactivity

( in the river at the nearest drinking water intake station posed no threat to public health and safety.

Region 11 performed on-site inspection following this occurrence and issued an Immediate Action Letter on February 1, 1977, confirming 11-censee comitments for corrective actions.  !

The plant manager has discussed the event with the Seneca Journal, Seneca, South Carolina, and Region II expects to issue a press release on 2/2/77.
