MEDIA INTEREST IN ALLEGATIONS {

l At approximately 2:30 p.m. on November 6,1978, NRC Region II (Atlanta) {

received a telephone call from a security guard regarding security guard training at the Oconee site. On November 7, 1978, NRC investigators met with a group of former and present guards of the Oconee Facility. Two members of the press were in attendance at the request of one of the former guards. Immediately following this initial meeting, the NRC l investigators met with the guards privately in the first step of the investigation. The guards alleged that they had not been properly O trained. The NRC investigators then proceeded to the site to continue their investigation, which is still in progress.

Media interest has been shown. During the 11:00 p.m., news, on November 7, 1978, a Greenville, S.C., CBS affiliated television stat, ion f/

released a brief statement concerning security at the Oconee plant being under investigation by the NRC. It is anticipated that two local news- A papers may also print an article concerning the same subject. Neither /g the licensee, nor the NRC plan to issue a press release.

This PN is being issued to advise the Commission of the media interest to date and the probability of continued interest on the part of the media during the course of this investigation.
