Docket Nos.: 50-348 and. 50-364 Mr. R.P. Mcdonald Senior Vice President Alabama Power Company Post Office Box 2641 Birmingham, Alabama 35291

Dear Mr.-Mcdonald:

SUBJECT:

RESOLUTION OF REACTOR TRIP BREAKER SAFETY-RELATED PROGRAM, GENERIC LETTER 83-28, ITEM 2.1 (PART 1) FOR JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 We have completed our review of your letter dated November 4,1983, relating to the Reactor Trip System components at the Farley site. Specifically, our review relates to the following requirement of Generic Letter 83-28 dated July 8, 1983:

Item 2.1 (Part 1) requires each licensee to confirm that all Reactor Trip System Components are identified, classified and treated as safety-related as indicated in the following statement:

Licensees and applicants shall confirm that all components whose functioning is required to trip the reactor are identified as safety-related on documents, procedures, and information handling systems used in the plant to control safety-related activities, including maintenance, work orders and parts replacement.

Based on our review, we find your proposals are acceptable as documented in the enclosed safety evaluation. Since Item 2.1 (MPA B-77) is included in the Safety Issues Management System (SIMS), please advise us of any change to your implementation date for entry into the SIMS database. A date is needed only if you consider that our safety evaluation would necessitate changes to the existing program at the Farley Nuclear Plant.

We note that our action for Item 2.1 (Part ?! vas completed by our letter dated December 15, 1986. No action is required for Item 2.1 (Part 2).

Sincerely,

~
