SUBJECT:

JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 RE: GENERIC LETTER 97-06 CLOSEOUT (TAC NOS. MA0914 AND MA0915)

Dear Mr. Morey:

On December 30,1997, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued Generic Letter (GL) 97-06," Degradation of Steam Generator Internals" to holders of pressurized water reactor operating licenses. The primary purpose of GL 97-06 was to obtain information so we could verify that the condition of steam generator internals conform to plant current licensing bases.

You submitted your GL 97-06 response to us on March 24,1998. We reviewed your response and did not identify any new concerns with the condition of the Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, steam generator internals. We also did not identify any concerns with the inspection practices you employ at Farley to detect steam generator internals degradation. Thus, we conclude that your GL 97-06 response provides reasonable assurance that the condition of the Farley steam generator internals are in compliance with plant current licensing bases.

We will publish the detailed technical basis that supports our determination in a NUREG report.

We expect to publish the NUREG in December 1999. This closes out GL 97-06 for the Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2. Please call me at (301) 415-1423 if you have any questions.
