ASME CODE CASE N-395 APPROVAL FOR JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, l
UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC h05. 77092 AND 77093)
In a July 2,1990, letter, you requested NRC authorization to use ASME Boiler I
and Pressure Vessel Code Case N-395, " Laser Welding." This Code Case is to be used by you in conjunction with a laser welded steam generator tube sleeving -
process developed by Westinghouse. The Westinghouse sleeving process is currently under review by the NRC staf f as requested by your letter dated August 16, 1990. As 10 CFR 50.55a(c)(3) requires that ASME Code Cases must have been determined suitable for use by the NRC, and Code Case N-395 has not received gene *1c approval for use by the NRC, your letter is viewed as a requestforNRCapprovalpursuantto10CFR50.55a(a)(3).
ASME Code Case H-195 contains the necessary welding procedure qualification requirements and pas approved by ASME on February 20, 1984. The NRC staff has reviewed the Code Case and finds that, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1), Code Case N-395 provides an acceptable level of quality and safety and is acceptable for use as requested. Staff review of your request for use of the Westinghouse laser welded stean generator tube sleeving process is ongoing and will be addressed in the future.
