- NRC PLANT PERFORMANCE REVIEW MEETING

SUMMARY

Dear Mr. Franz:

The NRC met with Alliant Utilities and Duane Amold Energy Center management on

- July 15,1999. This management meeting was open to public observation. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the recent Plant Performance Review issued by the NRC for the Duane Arnold Energy Center. Enclosure 1 contains the associated meeting summary. Enclosure 2 contains the handout provided to Alliant Utilities by the NRC during the meethg.

In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter and its enclosures will be placed in NRC's Public Document Room.

l The NRC communicated the background and results of the Plant Performance Review for the i period of September 28,1997, to January 31,1999, issued on March 26,1999. The results indicated overall acceptable performance at the station with consistent performance in operations, engineering, and plant support and improved performance in the maintenance area.

The licensee agreed with the performance assessment. The NRC provided the licensee and l members of the public present with a handout (Enclosure 2). l During the discussion, the NRC staff communicated the following questions or items for consideration:

  • the importance of bench marking Duane Amold versus the remainder of the nuclear industry, and what activities in this area were ongoing,

- the need for sustained corrective actions for problems identified during the 1998 refuel )

outage, and the importance of the corrective action program in identifying and resolving plant )

problems. '

Licensee management discussed some recent initiatives including outage planning, self assessments, and benchmarking visits to other nuclear facilities.
