PURPOSE The purpose of this welding procedure specification is to define and document detailed requirements associated with Shielded Metal Arc welding of prequalified joints as permitted by AWS D1.1-72, latest revision, Structural Welding Code.
SCOPE This procedure specification shall govern Manual Shielded Metal Arc welding Carbon Steel plate and shapes for structural applications.
I CODES & STANDARDS American Welding Society AWS D1.1-72, Structural Welding Code WELDING QUALIFICATIONS Welder performance qualifications shall be conducted in accordance with Section 5 of AWS Structural Welding Code, D1.1-72.

POSITION OF WELDING Flat, Horizontal, Vertical and Overhead FILLER METAL SPECIFICATION
- AWS A-5.1.
FILLER METAL CLASSlFICATION E-7010.
WELDING CURRENT Direct current.
POLARITY Reverse polarity base metal on negative side.
JOINT DETAIL Shall be as specified on the drawings and in accordance with the applicable attached figures.
EDGE PREPARATION Flame cut and/or grind, shear, saw or machine.
JOINT ASSEMBLY Tack weld.
Feather tacks by grinding and visually examine for cracks.
If cracks have occurred, re-move tacks progressively before incorporating them in the root pass.
SINGLE OR MULTIPLE PASS Groove welds, multiple pass.
Other welds, single or multiple as required to complete joint.
ROOT TREATMENT Complete joint penetration groove welds made n
without the use of steel backing shall have the l,
root gouged or ground to sound metal before weld-Ing is started on the second side.
Except for root and cover passes, multiple pass PEENING welds may be peened to' relieve stress and to help !
, maintain dimensional tolerance.
