- s VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT - UNIT 1 TECIINICAL SPECIFICATION SPECIAL REPORT l-96 2 NON-val.ID DIESEL GENERATOR (DG) FAILURES 1 A. REQUIREMENT FOR REPORT This report is required in accordance with the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant Technical Specifications (TS), section 4.8.1.1.3, which requires that all diesel generator (DG) failures, valid or non-valid, be reported to the Commission in a special report pursuant to TS 6.8.2.

H. DESCRIPTION OF FAILURES OF DIESEL GENERATORS 18 AND l A l On March 10,1996, at 1449 EST, DG1B was started for a maintenance run.

1.ouder than normal noises were heard coming from at least one right bank cylinder and the engine was stopped at 1518 EST to investigate. Rocker arm clearances were adjusted and the DG was restarted at 1551 EST and operated successfully.

On March 23,1996, at 1341 EST, DGI A was started for a maintenance run.

Personnel heard a knocking noise coming from a left bank cylinder and the engine was stopped at 1402 EST. Rocker arm clearances were adjusted and the DG was restarted at 1440 EST and operated successfully.

SUMMARY

The DGlB start of March 10,1996, and the DGI A start of March 23,1996, at 1341 EST, have been determined to be non-valid failures because the engines were prematurely shutdown in the course of maintenance activities.

DG1B has had one valid failure in the la.st 20 valid tests and 2 valid failures in the last 100 valid tests. DGI A has had one valid failure in the last 20 valid tests and 3 valid failures in the last 100 valid tests. The test frequency for both DGs remains at once per 31 days in accordance with the requirements of TS table 4.8-1.
