Dear Mr. Denton:

SRMARY Carolina Power & Light Company hereby submits additional information concerning the Detailed Control Room Design Review (DCRDR). This information is submitted in response to Safety Evaluation Report Open Item No. 1 4.

BACKGROUND Supplement No. 1 to NUREG-1038, "Safety Evaluation Report Related to the Operation of Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP), Unit No. 1," (June 1984) requested that additional information be submitted to the NRC staff concerning the SHNPP Detailed Control Room Design Review DCRDR at least six months before fuel load. Additionally, an NRC letter dated on August 10, 1984 requested additional information relative to the DCRDR be submitted by January 1, 1985.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Since receiving these documents, the SHNPP construction schedule has been revised and fuel load is now scheduled for March 1986. We are now planning to provide the additional information requested by March 30, 1985, in accordance with the requirement to submit information at least six months prior to fuel load. However, the following is a brief discussion of actions which are currently underway:

1. CP&L has contracted an outside consultant to prepare the DCRDR summary report. CP&L will work directly with the consultant in the preparation of the summary report.

2. A comparison will be made between the DCRDR requirements of NUREG/CR-1580 and those of NUREG-0700.

3. The summary report will contain the program plan and include those items already accomplished and those items remaining. This report will be submitted to the NRC by March 30, 1985 to address the above in accordance with NUREG-0 73 7, Supplement 1. For those items not yet completed, the summary report will include specific commitments for resolution.
