The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

TRANSPORTATf0N CASK IN EXCESS OF 00T CONTAMINATION LIMITS Duke Power Company reports that it received an empty NAC-1 fuel shipping cask from Nuclear Assurance Corporation in Wilmington, Delaware at its Oconee nuclear station, located near Saneca, South Carolina on July 8. The licensee performed routine receipt surveys and discovered four smears on the cask exterior in excess of maximum permissible limits.

The limit for exclusive use shipments of this type is 22,000 disintegrations per minute per 100 centimeters squared. Contamination indicated by the four smears and a subsequent detailed survey ranged from 26,565, to 60,000 dpm/100 cm/2.

The licensee notified the shipper, the carrier and the NRC Region II Office in Atlanta pursuant to the requirements of 10 CFR 20.205(b)(2).

Region II has notified Region I.

The measured levels of radioactivity, while in excess of allowable limits, are not expected to result in any adverse health affects for the vehicle operators and posed no threat to ,

public safety along the route of travel.

Routine follow-up will be conducted.

Media interest has not occurred.

Region II received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) on July 8.
