Docket No.: 50-440 .

Mr. Murray R. Edelman, Vice President

t. Cleveland, Ohio 44101 -

Dear Mr. Edelman:

p

Subject:

Request for Information Relative to Potential Impact of

. 10 CFR Part 21 Notifications Pertaining to TDI Emergency Diesel Generators Used in Perry Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 The NRC staff plans to issue a final Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the Transamerica DeLaval, Inc. (TDI) Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG) used in  %

Perry Unit 1, closing out reliability issues. This final SER will be based, L in part, upon the Design Review / Quality Revalidation (DR/QR) report provided

t. - by CEI. However, during the preparation and subsequent submittal of the DR/QR report, a number of 10 CFR Part 21 notifications have been issued by

- TDI regarding potentially generic . issues which need to be addressed by CEI.

Accordingly,~to permit the NRC staff to complete its review and issue the final 7, SER for Perry Unit 1 CEI is hereby requested to identify recent 10 CFR Part 21 reports issued by TDI since April 1984 which concern problems potentially appli-cable to the Perry EDG's, but which are not addressed in the DR/QR report. In so doing, describe the action (s) taken for each 10 CFR Part 21 notification assessing whether the potential problem exists; the causes for each problem; -

short and long term corrective actions taken; and implementation schedules.

With respect to the recently observed problems with Clow Williams-Hagar check valves (10 CFR Part 21 notifications from TDI dated March 12, March 14,

-April 4, and April 10,1985), CEI is requested to address actions relative to the check valves located not just in the air start system, but._also any such valves located in other EDG systems (e.g., jacket water and bibe oil).

e Mr. Murray R. Edelman .

The need for an expedited response to this request was discussefwith Ms. E. M.. Buzzelli of your staff on June 11, 1985, during which the she .

was informed that the staff has scheduled . issuance of the Perry Urrit 1 final SER in late July 1985. Therefore. it is urged that CEI proffde the above requested information by July 1, 1985, with a copy provided directly to the NRC. staff's contractor, Pacific Northwest Laboratories. If there are any questions, please advise the Perry Project Manager.

Sincerely,

, . /
