UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS - UPDATE This PN updates PNO-II-85-71, issued July 25, 1985.

Disassembly of the inboard main steam line isolation valve in main steam line "A" has revealed a broken valve stem in the vicinity of the stem's backseat portion.

It appears that the break may have been caused by a metal fatigue failure. The affected valve in Unit I was manufactured by Atwood Morrel, but main steam isolation valves in Hatch Unit 2--which is operating at 100 percent power--are from a different vendor. Georgia Power is continuing to evaluate the valve problem.

Georgia Power is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
