SUBJECT:

REACTOR OUTAGE FCR DRYWELL VEllTILATI0il MODIFICATIO:lS The licensee plans to shutdown Unit No. 2 on August 21, to modify the drywell ventilation system.

This is required to reduce the concrete j

temperature at the top of the biological shield. At operating conditions the maximum concrete temperature at the top of the biological shield is 276 degrees F.

Although this temperature does.not exceed an operating limit, it is considered too high for long-term operation because g

of possible concrete spalling.

Unit 2 has been undergoing low power startup testing. The modifications are expected to require a two week outage.

A Region II (Atlanta) inspector is on site.

Media interest is not expected. The licensee plans to issue a news release.

The State of Georgia has been notified.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Assistant Plant Manager at 2:00 p.m. on August 17.
