PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-78-106 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Georgia Power Company Hatch, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-321 Baxley, Georgia
SUBJECT:
LEAK IN UFF-GAS LINE Discovery of a leak in the off-gas system, which caused release of airborne radioactivity into the turbine building, prompted the licensee to shut down the reactor at 10:15 p.m. on May 7.
The observation of vapor condensation in the vicinity of the cable way where the off-gas line is embedded in concrete led to discovery of the leak.
No personnel i
overexposure occurred. Releases to unrestricted areas were.below NRC limits.
The buried off-gas piping is being excavated to permit further M
examination. The licensee estimates that the facility will be out of service at least one week. An IE i'nspector is onsite reviewing the 5

There has been no media interest.
The licensee is considering a news elease. The NRC does not plan a news release at this time.
The State j
of Georgia has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by tele-phone from the Plant Superintendent at 8:30 a.m. on May 8.
